What are my rights?

     by Inovar Autismo

Like any other citizen, people with disabilities have the right to ensure that their rights are respected, such as access to health and medical treatment, education, vocational training and rehabilitation, support and counselling, placement services and other services that enable them to develop their full potential and live their daily lives to the fullest.

You can consult the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted in 2006, to learn more about your rights. This convention aims to “… to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by people with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.” (Article 1)

In this document, you will realize that your rights must be guaranteed in the various contexts of the community to achieve effective inclusion. To be included is:

– Be able to participate in all regular community contexts;

– To be a part, to have a voice, to make free choices in all domains of life or, in the limit, to have decision support;

– Be able to participate in activities, services, equipment for ALL – people with and without disabilities;

– Not be segregated;

– To be respected for their potential, not to be infantilized, diminished;

– Be supported in decision making rather than someone else deciding for us.
